Roy Tea was born and raised in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah. He was the youngest of thirteen children. After graduating high school he enlisted in the army and spent a year in Japan. He then attended Brigham Young University and received a B.S. in geology. He earned his professional engineer license while working at the Utah State Department of Transportation.
